The Shelburne Firefighters’ Association was formed to raise funds to benefit the Shelburne Fire Department, outside those funds provided by the citizens of Shelburne through their local taxes. Although the SFA is run by the members of the Shelburne Fire Department, the SFA bylaws specifically prohibit the Association from transferring any of the funds raised to members of the Shelburne Fire Department. The SFA is also prohibited from funding any activities or equipment for the Department that are a legitimate obligation of the Town of Shelburne.
The SFA can, however, accept donations and use those donations to purchase equipment for the Department that is beyond the obligation of the Town. For example, the Town of Shelburne funded the Department’s first infrared camera, the SFA purchased the second. Donations to the SFA can only be used to benefit the Shelburne Fire Department.
The SFA has also benefited from the generosity of local businesses like GE Healthcare and General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, who have donated used computer equipment.
Donations to the SFA are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.
